      OUR PARTNERS

The University of Copenhagen in partnership with the Dodowa Health Research Centre, the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has been awarded funding from the Danish Ministry of Foreign affairs to conduct a sanitation research project in the Dangme West District of Ghana, with a focus on rapidly developing townships.
The Dangme West District in Ghana has been chosen as the study site for this research because in the last 10 years the proportion of urban residents has risen from 20% to 40%, outpacing the capacity of local government to cope with the accompanying sanitation challenges.

The aims of the project are:

  1. To use a multidisciplinary, demand driven approach to identify existing barriers to and opportunities for improved sanitation
  2. To explore and select faecal management solutions that residents will use and maintain in poor urban settings.
  3. To identify relevant business partnerships for building, financing, promoting and maintaining hygienic latrine solutions

The project is designed to operate in two phases:
Phase 1 - A rapid baseline study to take place in June and July of 2011 and;
Phase 2 - An in-depth, multi-year research project conducted by Ghanaian PhD students jointly supervised by Ghanaian and Danish academics.  Phase 2 field work takes place April 2012 – September 2013.
